Namaste, or the more formal Namaskar, is an ancient Sanskrit greeting that is still used in India today. It is most often accompanied by a slight bow made with hands pressed together, palms touching and fingers pointed upwards and closely positioned in front of the chest. It's literal translation is “I bow to you”.
Namaste can be much more than your average hello and goodbye. It is also a respectful greeting. For many, it is acknowledging, or recognizing, the life force that is within us all. You will commonly see it defined as “The Light in me honors the Light in you.”
I observed Namaste being used in multiple ways in my travels in India. It can be casual as well as spiritual and respectful.
